New, pulled and used parts — what the words mean
- New: sealed, with the manufacturer's warranty. Bur Dubai's business. The right choice for a graphics card or a motherboard you will depend on for years.
- Pulled: taken from working ex-corporate machines that were broken up for parts — the CPU, RAM and drive of a Dell OptiPlex that came off a lease. Never retail-boxed, tested before sale, and the source of nearly every used component in the Sharjah market.
- Used: the same thing, sometimes with more hours on it. In practice the two words are used interchangeably in the UAE; what matters is that the seller tests the part and stands behind it.
Used processors and memory make sense where the workload is known and the budget is fixed: office desktops, point-of-sale terminals, training rooms, bulk assembly. A fourth- to eighth-generation Core i5 still runs an office all day, and the price difference against new is not a percentage — it is a multiple. Drives are the exception: a used 3.5-inch hard drive is a fair buy for bulk storage at 102 AED per terabyte-class unit, but for a machine's boot drive most assemblers now fit a new SSD.

The compatibility trap: LGA1151 is not one socket
The most expensive mistake in buying used desktop processors is a name. Intel used the LGA1151 socket for four generations — 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th — but 8th- and 9th-generation processors (i5-8400, i7-8700, i5-9400) only run on 300-series chipsets (H310, B360, Z370, B365, Z390). Drop an i5-8400 into a board with an H110 or B250 chipset and it will not even reach the BIOS, although the socket fits. The reverse is also true. Before ordering a box of CPUs, match generations to chipsets:

Memory has its own version of the trap: DDR3, DDR4 and DDR5 modules are keyed differently and do not interchange, and laptop SO-DIMMs do not fit desktop boards. When you send a parts list, send the board model with it and the mismatch is caught before the carton is packed.

What to check before you pay for a part
- Exact SKU and stepping on the invoice — "i5 8th gen" is not a part number; "i5-8400 / 8500" is.
- Generation against chipset for CPUs; DDR type and form factor for memory.
- Tested, and by what: a burn-in for CPUs, a memory test for modules, SMART data and hours for drives. Ask what a failed part does — at a proper wholesaler it is pulled, never sold as a lower grade.
- Warranty in writing: period, replacement or refund, who ships. Ours is 60 days, replacement.
- Packing: anti-static bags and rigid boxes; a tray of bare CPUs in a padded envelope is how pins get bent in transit.
